Carpetbaggers=

An HMS American Cultures Collaborative Production

Carpetbaggers were Northerners who came to the South post Civil War to hold an office. Southerners viewed them as scrounging, grasping men who were out to make money off of the beaten down South, taking advantage of their success in the war. In reality, some of them were representatives, some were seeking ways to help the now freed slaves, and some really were just eager adventurers. A lot of former Union soldiers ended up renting plantations and hiring freed slaves to do the labor, interested in the stories of fortunes made off of cotton.
