Confederate Secret Service

an HMS American Cultures collaborative production

During the Civil War many secret groups came together. The Union thought the acts of these groups went beyond "civilized" warfare but the Confederates thought that they were desperate measures because the Union had alot more things--more men, more guns, more supplies. In 1864 the Confederate Congress to create a Secret Bureau even though it was only activated in March 1865--it was never used in the Civil War. In April 1865 many of the official papers were burned by Judah P. Benjamin--the Confederate Secratary of State.
