In the American Civil War England was officially neutral. However, the Confederate strategy was largely based on intervention from England and France, this however never happened. Though the English never directly interfered in the war the English had built two warships for the confederacy after a serious conflict between U.S and England was developed in the Trent Affair in 1861. England also operated most of the blockade runners, but that was completely legal. At the end of the war the involvement of England didn't shift the outcome of the war, and did not force the U.S to declare war on England.
