First created to honor soldiers of the Civil War, and originally called Decorative Day, expanded after World War I, in order to include American casualties of war.The 30th day of May, 1868, is for decorating with flowers around the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, whose bodies lie around churchyard. Toward the end of the Civil War, many communities set aside a day to mark the end of the war, a memorial to those who died in war. Some of the places creating an early memorial day include Sharpsburg, Maryland, located near Antietam Battlefield; Charleston, South Carolina; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; Richmond, Virginia; Carbondale, Illinois; Columbus, Mississippi; litrmont; and two dozen other cities and towns. Now, Decoration Day honors the Union soldiers who died.
